Birth Mother Search – Obtaining Necessary Identifying Information-Part 2

Please note:  A special FREE OFFER is included at the end of this post.  In our prior post, Birth Mother Search – Obtaining Necessary Identifying Information, we mentioned that one way to obtain identifying information on your birth mother and your adoption is to request  Non-Identifying Information.   Non-identifying information is simply the background information surrounding your adoption.  When it is prepared, the preparer typically (but often not too successfully :) ) attempts to remove all the identifying information.  Your non-identifying information might disclose…

  • Age information on your birth mother
  • Education background of your birth mother
  • Her religious affiliations
  • Her physical description
  • Medical history of your birth mother
  • Your family nationality
  • Professions of the birth mother and her birth parents
  • If the birth mother and father were single or married
  • Hobbies
  • Why you were put up for adoption
  • Ages of the birth grand parents
  • First names of grand parents
  • Additional historical information

Ideally,  it is best to request your non-identifying information from the agency that handled your adoption.  If you don’t know the adoption agency, it’s possible to obtain your non identifying information from state and county entities.  Our OmniTrace blog is brand new.  In time, we will be providing posts and pages that detail exactly how you should request non-identifying information on your own.  For now, we are providing you a VERY SPECIAL FREE OFFER – Provide us details about your adoption in a comment to this post and we will post back instructions on how you can obtain your non-id.  We’ll likely need, at the very least, the following information:

  1. Name of Adoption Agency
  2. Date of Birth
  3. State of Birth
  4. County and/or City of Birth

The more details you care to post, the better we can assist you.  We are looking forward to hearing from you, and we’ll try to write back with instructions in a timely manner.  You can also email us at: info@omnitrace.com

  1. I was born 11/6/68, in the Bronx,NY
I have my non-id and found out by birthname:Margaret Ann Collins
I have a reason to believe I am the result of date rape and that my father may not know I exist. I have some info about him and his name was not listed in the birthindex. I have to find my birthmother(only she & her mother knew of me) i’m pretty sure mat grandparents are deceased, so she is my only link to find him.
Based on his info I am more like my father.
My mother would be 64 now(she was 24 when I was born)If she is deceased do I have any recourse with the Foundling Hospital to release the original b cert w/ fathers info? I could sure use some guidance on what should be my next step!

In search of Birth Mother, or any possible full or half Siblings who can shed some light on medical history. I was born July 5th, 1962, adopted on September 28th, 1962 out of the CATHOLIC CHARITIES in Indianapolis, IN (by 2 irreplaceable adoptive parents, who have given me all the love I’ve ever needed.) For the first time ever, in search primarily for medical information duw to some health concerns, as well as my own 2 children, both with medical issues. Have no info on birth mother, circumstances, hospital, nor doctor, etc., except that mother was most likely a young, unwed mother, perhaps just out of high school. Assume I was born in Indiana…please help. This is very personal information and I don’t wish to be lead around on a futile, expensive, public search. Thank you respectfully.

  3. KAMP says:

Dear Administrator: Please contact via email as well. I forgot to check that box. Found out today from my supportive adoptive parents that I was adopted through the St. Elizabeth’s Home for the Innocence program through Catholic Charities in Indianpolis, IN, with Caseworker. “Mr. Logan,” and was referred to as “Maria,” that I had just been received by CC recently at 2.5 months,(we assume), and that caseworker had little info on me other than birth mother was a young, unwed mother, most likely still in high school. Am searching for my non-id info. Please advise of any other possible resources available to me in my search. Thank you!

    Hi Kamp.

    Thanks for writing.

We’ll put together a little information for you on how to obtain your non-id. This should be posted shortly.

    Best regards,

The Search Advisor / OmniTrace Staff

  5. admin says:

    Attention Kamp:

Here are two places that you should request your non-identifying information from:

    1) St. Elizabeth/Coleman Pregnancy and Adoption Services – 2500 Churchman Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46203. You should call them and ask if there is a particular department to direct your request to. Their phone number is: 317-787-3412 and their toll free line is: 800-499-9113.

    2) Indiana Adoption History Registration – Identifying Information Consent — Here is where you can print out the PDF form:

    http://www.in.gov/icpr/webfile/formsdiv/47896.pdf

The address where you send this form is included on the form.

Please be sure to request your non-identifying information from both sources. Each entity may provide you different information which you can cross-reference.

    Good luck!

    Best regards,

Dear Administrators, is there any way you could somehow obtain the names or a list of baby girls born in July 5th, 1962 in Indianapolis, IN (Marion County I believe)??? I am in process of rquesting Non-ID & ID info from state, but I have read on the web in many case Mary Hind at Vital Stats Indiana is less than accomodating.

Also, can you advise if when sending her my forms, should I attach a cover letter giving her any expanded background on me? (Should I include a somewhat warm-n-fuzzy personal request to obtain my God-given birth info that I am entitled to have as a human being?) I don’t even know how much I weighed, for God’s sake!

Any help is much appreciated. You guys are great! Thank you.

I am: Adoptee ISO BMother or any BFamily (living or deceased)
    Born: July 5, 1962, female.
    Indianapolis, IN
    Adopted thru St Elizabeth’s/Catholic Charities
No info known, other than mother most likely BMother very young, unwed student perhaps. No names known, nor any birth details re: wt, ht, time of birth, hospial of birth, nationality/ethnicity, etc…

Adoptees are stripped of basic human rights, their own id’s.

P.S. I’ve had a wonderful upbringing with awesome Aparents I wouldn’t trade for anything. Hope I never find out my bfamily was trash.

  7. Amyadoptee says:

I don’t recommend using their confidential intermediary. I would use one of two others. One is Lori Baxter out of Marion Indiana. Another is Candy Jones out of Lafayette, Indiana. Both are excellent. Both will continue to help you and your natural mother through the process.

The St. Elizabeth Coleman confidential intermediary will more than likely ruin whatever reunion you might normally get if you used one of the other two. You don’t need that. If you are an adoptee, I highly recommend Candy Jones. If you are a natural mother, I recommend Lori Baxter. I have heard many a good thing about both of them. If you want you can also join the Coleman Moms and Babes email list at yahoo groups. I also recommend joining Soaring Angels yahoo groups, Indiana Searching, and Looking Indiana yahoo groups.

I also recommend reading Ann Fessler’s book, The Girls Who Went Away. If you can find, Betty Lifton’s book, Journey of the Adopted Self.

  8. admin says:

Thanks Amy for that very helpful information! If you would like, we’ll create a link to your blog site on our adoption search pages. Please let us know.

Hi Kamp. Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. We have been receiving a very large number of inquiries and are having a tough time keeping up.

We are not aware of a way to obtain a list of baby girls born on July 5, 1962 in Indianapolis. These types of lists are available in other states and other cities but unfortunately, not where you were born. We use several proprietary methods to solve cases in Indiana that don’t require a list of this nature.

When sending for non-id, it can never hurt to personalize your request. But stay away from “God-given info” and things like that. You don’t want to put the receiver of your request on the defensive.

Please let us know when you obtain your non-id. We’ll be happy to review it for you (our treat) and give you some free advice.

  9. KAMP says:

Thank you Amyadoptee and advisors for your responses! How do I go about contacting the 2 intermediary’s mentioned? And at what point? Do I involve them as soon as I get my info from the state, but prior to approaching St. Elizabeth’s for anything? In other words, do they contact St. Elizabeth’s Coleman or do I? (PS. I have already gotten with Coleman Mom’s and Babes. Awesome blogspot and reference. I learned a lot about the nomenclature of adoptions in the 60’s at the homes.)

Name after adoption and on current Birth Cert. Lesley Ann Hilton Mother: Joanna Lou Flynt Father: Gary Michael Hilton. Date filed 2-28-73. Cert. No. 027135-1973 There is another number on the cert. that is J052856. Don’t know what this references. The issue date of this certificate was 8-3-2004. Had lost the “original” cert. that my parents gave me (same info, the 2nd certificate if you will) years ago.

Thank you for any and all help.
    Lesley Hilton

PS- searched thru Texas birth index that I located on David Gray’s people finder dot com and was not listed in the year 1973 under my adoptive name. Am in the process of searching all the “inf-of” births of that year. on page 786 and just on Cunningham. This could take a while…lol.

  13. Lesley Hilton says:

I am searching is for medical reasons. At 33 I was diagnosed with several auto-immune disorders and diseases. I had a very limited amount of information that came with me, but several of these conditions never develop until later in life. If memory serves me right, my birth mother was 22 when I was born, and I would like to know how her health has progressed over the years. It is frustrating putting “unknown” in the family medical history blank on a new patient questionnaire.

  14. Dina says:

I hear that, I am 33 and pregnant with my 4th child all has went well in other pregnancies but this one has been shaky and if I had my medical history would make me feel much better when I petitioned court I was given medical history from what my bio family knew at that time which could have easily changed since but I will never know. And I hate the look you get when you put unknown on the history sheet.

Hello, my name is Catherine Renee Dodson. My Adopted Birth Certificate says I was born in Marion, Indiana at Marion General Hospital on March 31st, 1971. My adoption was handled thru the Grant County Welfare Office under the direction of Doris Miller.(Retired) My adoptive parents used the law firm of Kiley, Harker, Rogers, Micheal and Certain out of Marion, Indiana to handle their side of the adoption.
I have Brown Eyes, Brown Hair, Olive Complexion and very athletic.

I am married now with 3 children and need to find the missing pieces of my life puzzle. Time is getting shorter everyday I do not know where I come from or who I am. I need help please.

    Thank you very much.

  17. Claire says:

I am looking for my birth parents. When I was born they were not married. I was born June 25, 1984 in Bridgeton,NJ. My birth parents were both from Northern Minnesota. My birthmother was from Bagley, MN, and was Swedish. My birth father was almost full blooded Chippewa(Ojibwe) Indian, either adopted or taken from one of the three reservations surrounding Bagley (White Earth, Red Lake, Leech Lake). My birth mother allegedly was married before and had at least 3 children, of whom she lost custody for an unknown reason. I was born and adopted in at Bridgeton Hospital (no lnoger exists) in Bridgeton, NJ about 3 days after birth. It was a private adoption, and my parents never would tell me the name of the agency, though I was told by a friend it may have been called Golden Cradle, or something along those lines. I have been wanting to find my birth parents since I was little, but my parents (mostly my mother) has been very guarded about it. I would like to meet them if possible, and just to know…and to be able to close that chapter of my life.

i was born 12-16-1963. leesburg, florida. lake county. finalized at lake county courthouse in tavares, fl. presiding judge troy hall. and i was a private adoption, handeled by p. b. howell…now deceased.
i tried to contact the lake county courthouse to get my non id, but was told that all they had was the ‘final decree’, and no non id. i contacted the son of p.b. howell, who took his fathers practice when he passed. they told me that they had “lost” my file. as a volunteer search angel, i have seen forms on sites such as kinsolving, and have seen other forms from people with the same atty, and judge, within months before, and after, my own. so those records obviously exist somewhere. i just havent been able to find a friendly person who knows that i am entitled to this info!! please help!!

Also, I have a sister in law, that was adopted out too, and the story is her mother was a lady of the evening in truck stops in California. She spent her 18Th birthday year looking for her in truck stops. I believe my mother In Law is a witch when it comes to the truth. And needs to help her children who are adults heal.

My husbands, dad was a drunk that had a master degree? and a mom pregnant from this man when she broke up with her husband? Then went back to her husband and gave this baby boy up. I just want to know the truth, I am tried of the lies.

  48. terri says:

hi. i wrote before, but i didnt see your search consultants email. i have a new number i posted.
i desperately need some help tho… i was born 12-16-1963. leesburg, fl., lake county. atty’s name was p.b. howell.
the atty, p.b. howell JR., who took over his fathers practice, (along with another atty), his secretary told me they had “lost” 6 years of files, mine included. then lake county courthouse told me they “only kept the final decree”, and wouldnt be worth my money to file to have my records opened.
my cousin (adopted), found out that the atty purged his files before 1977. and the hospital purged thiers before 1990. (she lives in leesburg, works at the library and historical society. so she knows alot of people there).
so i dont know “if” my records even exist anywhere. was my adoption…or the means of…even legal? im truely at a loss.
im a “search angel”, and i have completed many forms for many people. but cant even get my own non id!!! helllllp!!!! please!!!
does my OBC even exist???? i somehow fell thru the cracks, and dont know where to turn!!
    sincerely,
    Terri

  49. Terri French says:

hi!! i am writing again, because i talked to the attorney’s office who handeled my adoption, and this time, they didnt say that my records were lost, or purged. this time, they told me that they have them…somewhere in storage, but do not have anyone to sift thru them. i volunteered, but that wasnt an option. some part of me believes they still have my file, and they ‘could’ easily find it. they just WONT!! …i said that terrible word…”adoption”. it seems that everyone shuts down as soon as they hear that word!! i dont understand. i have a medical NEED for some information. but i cant seem to find anyone to help me find it.
please tell me where to turn next with this?
thank you for your time, it is most appreciated!!
